What do you do when you don’t feel like trusting God and you just want to give up? This is something that happens to all of us from time to time. When our faith collides with our feelings. No matter if you’re a new believer or have been a believer for many years, there are going to be days when you aren’t going to feel like trusting God.
It could be that you feel so overwhelmed with what’s happening in your life at work, in your marriage or with your health that you just don’t feel like trusting God and want to give up. Or, maybe it’s because things in your life are just too complicated. What are some specific reasons why I sometimes don’t feel like trusting God?
1. Because I am WORRIED
In the parable of the sower and the seed worry is one of the things that can choke the faith in your life and cause you not to trust God.
Luke 8:14 The seed among the thorns represents those who listen and believe God’s words but whose faith afterwards is choked out by worry… (LB)
2. Because I’m AFRAID
Fear is the exact opposite of faith and trusting in God.
Hebrews 10:38 The person who is right with me will live by trusting in me. But if he turns back with fear, I will not be pleased with him. (NCV)
3. Because I’m STUBBORN
Pride can get in the way of faith and trusting God on a daily basis.
Mark 16:14 Afterwards, Jesus appeared to his eleven disciples as they were eating. He scolded them because they were too stubborn to believe the ones who had seen him after he had been raised to life. (CEV)
4. Because I’m DOUBTFUL
No one is a better example of this than doubting Thomas.
John 20:25 The other followers told Thomas, “We saw the Lord.” But Thomas said, “I will not believe it until I see the nail marks in his hands. And I will not believe until I put my finger where the nails were and put my hand into his side.” (ICB)
The reality of life is that the reason we don’t trust God sometimes is just because we don’t feel like it. But what does the Bible say about this?
Psalm 62:8a Trust in God at all times, my people… (TEV)
God says, it doesn’t matter what you’re feeling or what emotion you’re dealing with in your life, that’s not an excuse not to trust or have faith in him. Imagine what our faith would look like if we only trusted God when we felt like it!
How many of you have ever been hooked up to a heart monitor? Imagine what your faith would look like on a monitor if it was dependent on your feelings. Your faith would be up and down, up and down, up and down because you’re feelings are all over the chart from day to day. Some days you’re up and happy and the next day you’re down and sad.
The great thing about faith is I don’t have to feel like trusting in order to trust. Because trust isn’t based on your temperament and faith isn’t a feeling. So you can trust God no matter how you feel!
John 14:1 Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. (NIV)
