Something To Brighten Your Day

Back in 2010 our country was going through the “Great Recession.”  That’s when we moved into our present building.  During that time I spoke on this topic and I wanted to share it with you again.  Afterall, it was ten years ago!  I encourage you to read this very shortened and revised version of the message I delivered and that it will brighten your day.

These days in which we live are truly dark days!  They are filled with uncertainty.  We can’t see what might happen in the days and weeks ahead.  Because of the darkness we are filled with confusion and we have lots of questions.  Will I get sick?  Will I have a job?  Will I lose my house?  When will things get better?

None of us knows all the answers.  Not even our government.  But God has the answer to every dark day we experience.  God’s answer to our dark days is Jesus Christ!

John 8:12 …Jesus said to the people, “I am the Light of the world. So if you follow me, you won’t be stumbling through the darkness, for living light will flood your path.” (LB)

There are many different kinds of dark days we’re going to experience in life.  Some of you have already experienced these.  Others are going to experience them.  The Bible says we’re going to go through four different kinds of darkness in our life.

First, we’re going to experience the dark days of disappointment.
Second, we’re going to experience the dark days of distress.
Third, we’re going to experience the dark days of doubt.
Fourth, we’re going to experience the dark days of depression.

That’s the way Europe felt during World War II when they were under attack by Germany.  Winston Churchill said, “The light has gone out in Europe.”  Some of you may feel that way right now.  You feel like the light has gone out of your life.

So where do you turn in your dark days?  What’s the antidote?

2 Samuel 22:29 You, Lord, are my light; you dispel my darkness. (TEV)

How does God do that?  How does he dispel the darkness in our life?  How does he lighten up your life?  He does four things that are able to bring light into the dark days of your life.

First, God encourages me when I’m disappointed.

Psalm 34:18 The Lord is near to those who are discouraged; he saves those who have lost all hope. (TEV)

Second, God strengthens me when I’m distressed.

Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you. (ESV)

Third, God guides me when I’m doubtful.

Psalm 119:105 Your words are a flashlight to light the path ahead of me and keep me from stumbling. (LB)

Fourth, God changes me when I’m depressed

Ephesians 5:13 It is possible for light to turn the thing it shines upon into light also!  (PH)

When the light of God shines in your life, it brightens you up!  It transforms the darkness in your life into light!

1 John 2:8 …the darkness in our lives disappears and the light of life in Christ shines in. (LB)

The point is, you can choose to either live in darkness or light.  God shines the sun on everybody, but you can choose to live in a cave if you want to.  God shows you the light, but you can choose to close your eyes and not look at it.  When you walk into a dark room you can choose to sit in the darkness or you can choose to turn on the light.

The way to turn on the light in your life and get rid of the darkness is by having faith in Jesus Christ, the light of this world!

John 12:46 I have come as a Light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in me will no longer wander in the darkness. (LB)

May God brighten your day today and keep you safe and healthy!  I love you all!
