In 1927 the USS S-4 (SS-109), an S-class submarine of the United States Navy was accidentally rammed by a Coast Guard destroyer and sunk, with all its crew off the East coast. When divers went down to rescue survivors they could hear someone on the inside hammering out a message in Morse Code on the hull of the boat asking, “Is there hope?”
That’s one of the fundamental universal questions of life. Is there hope? It’s asked everyday by people in thousands of ways. When you’re setting in the doctor’s office waiting for test results, you ask, “Is there hope?” When you’re going through marriage problems you ask, “Is there hope?” When you’re in debt financially and can’t pay your bills you ask, “Is there hope?” When you seem to be going through problem after problem you ask, “Is there hope.”
You can go forty days without food, three days without water and eight minutes without air but you can’t go a single second without hope! Hope is absolutely essential for life. So, you need hope to cope.
Because hope is in such short supply in our world today, people fall for all kind of scams. They trust in things like physic hotlines, palm reading, astrology, fake healers, quack cures and all kinds of crazy things. And of course, these things eventually disappoint them and as a result they end up being worse off.
So, where do I go to find hope when I experience a crises in my life?
Romans 15:13 May God, the source of hope, fill you with joy and peace through your faith in Him. Then you’ll overflow with hope… (GW)
Hope is found in God. There are three reasons you can find hope in God and never have to feel hopeless again. What are they? First, I can have hope because…
1. God’s Presence is Watching Over Me
Psalm 32:8 I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you. (NLT)
None of us knows the future or can control what will happen in the future, but God can! And the good news is that he’s willing to guide, advise and show you the way. Why? Because he loves you!
Lamentations 3:21-23 I have hope when I think of this: The Lord’s love never ends; His mercies never stop. They are new every morning. (NCV)
Most of us can look back at something in our lives and say “I really blew it there. I wish I hadn’t done that.” We feel hopeless because we think we’ve messed up our life so bad that there’s no hope for us. But the Bible says God gives us a new fresh start every morning. So, I can have hope knowing that no matter how bad I mess things up, God loves me, he is merciful to me and he gives me a fresh start every day! That’s why we can have hope!
Not only can we have hope because God’s presence is watching over me, but second, because…
2. God’s Purpose is Working in Me
One of the reasons we sometimes feel hopeless is because we can’t figure out why something is happening to us. Have you ever asked yourself, “Why is this happening to me?” One of the most difficult things to handle in life is when something doesn’t make sense to us. On the other hand, when you see a purpose behind your problem it can give you enormous hope, power and endurance.
The Bible says, no matter what’s happening in my life God’s purpose is always working in me. That means God is doing good things in my life even when the situation is bad, even when I don’t feel it, even when it doesn’t make sense and even when I can’t figure things out.
Jeremiah 29:11 I have good plans for you, not plans to hurt you. I will give you hope and a good future. (NCV)
That means there is no such thing as fate, chance, luck or karma. But there is a grand architect and master designer of the entire universe whose named is God and he has a plan and purpose for my life not matter what happens! Hope is the certainty that God’s purpose is at work in your life regardless of how things turn out.
So, I can have hope because God’s presence is watching over me, God’s purpose is working in me and third, because…
3. God’s Place is Waiting for Me
Here on earth we’re going to go through many different trials and problems. Some of you are going to get sick, be in pain, have sorrow, experience grief and have conflicts. Where do you find the hope you need during times like that?
John 14:1-2 Don’t be troubled. You trust God, now trust in Me… I am going to prepare a place for you. (NLT)
What is the name of that place? It’s called heaven! Heaven is a real place, not a state of mind. What kind of place is heaven?
Revelation 21:4 He will wipe away all tears from their eyes, and there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying, nor pain. All of that has gone forever. (LB)
So when things get unbearable in your life you need to remember that our ultimate hope is heaven! Knowing that heaven is a real place can give you real hope in this life.
1 Peter 1:4-6 God has reserved for His children the priceless gift of eternal life; it is kept in heaven for you… And God, in His mighty power, will make sure that you get there safely to receive it because you are trusting Him… So be truly glad! There is wonderful joy ahead, even though the going is rough for a while down here. (LB)
How do you get to heaven? It’s by trusting Jesus Christ! How about you? Have you put your faith in Jesus? Do you have the hope of heaven in your heart? If not, I want to encourage you to accept him today.
